Long Stories Short is a community-focused initiative offering creative writing workshops and risograph printing. Our mission is to empower people to share stories, connect through creativity, and celebrate overlooked voices in vibrant, accessible ways.

We aim to support adults of all abilities and backgrounds to build confidence, creativity, community and wellbeing through affordable, inclusive workshops in a warm, nurturing, low-pressure environment.

We deliver inclusive writing workshops online and in person, sometimes combining creative writing with image-making and other art forms.

Our Mission

We offer bespoke, tailor-made workshops in partnership with organisations, from one-off sessions to weekly or monthly programmes shaped around your needs.

Long Stories Short has two strands, writing workshops and risograph printing, which can work together or separately, giving participants the chance to write, create and see their work in print.

We also offer a 10-week introduction to creative writing course covering poetry, fiction, memoir and nature writing. Genres change every two weeks, and each can also be taught separately. Plus, a 3 to 6 week short course on writing about people, places and things.

Our Story

Long Stories Short began in 2023 as a collaboration between Melanie Hering, a creative writing and drama facilitator, and Thomas Cuthbertson, an artist and art therapist.

Melanie studied comparative literature and applied theatre, and has spent the past ten years facilitating creative writing, arts and drama workshops with young people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds, children, young people and adults with additional needs, and older adults in the community.

Thomas has a background in drawing and fine art, and spent many years working for the NHS in healthcare and as an arts and wellbeing facilitator before training as an art therapist. Melanie leads the writing strand of Long Stories Short, while Tom leads the visual arts and printing.

We have received grant funding from Engage, Deli Meets and the National Lottery Fund.
