At Long Stories Short we believe that everybody has a story to tell, and deserves to be seen and heard.

Our mission is to offer spaces where people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities can come together for creative writing and risograph printing.

We work to remove any barriers to accessing our workshops by offering free or low-cost ticket prices, choosing step-free spaces with accessible facilities, offering freedom to work at your own pace and choices around sharing your work.

Our Mission

We offer bespoke, tailor-made workshops in partnership with organisations, from one-off sessions to weekly or monthly programmes shaped around your needs. We deliver our workshops online and in person, sometimes combining creative writing with image-making and other art forms.

Long Stories Short has two strands: creative writing workshops and risograph printing. These can work together or separately, giving participants the chance to write and create with the option to see their work in a risograph printed publication. For more on what risograph printing is, RISO POP describes it well here.

Our Story

Long Stories Short began in 2023 as a collaboration between Melanie Hering, a creative writing and drama facilitator, and Thomas Cuthbertson, an artist and art therapist.

Melanie studied Comparative Literature and Applied Theatre. She has spent the past ten years facilitating creative writing, arts and drama workshops in the community. Between June 2020-2023, Melanie hosted a series of online writing workshops called 'Last Thursdays'. These workshops inspired the beginnings of Long Stories Short.

Thomas has a background in drawing and fine art and is a qualified Art Therapist. He spent many years working for the NHS in healthcare and as an arts and wellbeing facilitator in the local community before training in art therapy.

Mel leads the writing strand of Long Stories Short, while Thomas leads on visual art-making and risograph printing.

Long Stories Short have been recipients of grant funding from Engage, Deli Meets and the National Lottery Fund.
